RENIE SPOELSTRA

ROTTERDAM, NL, 1974

Renie Spoelstra strives with her grand charcoal drawings for intentional apathy; hours and days pass in a flash, every moment frozen in time and every moment the same. Her more recent work is particularly concerned the generalisation of the unique. She wants to reduce concrete consciousness in such a way that it can function as a substitute for a number similar situations.

In 2001 she began with photographing different pieces of Dutch woodland and recreational areas that bore no specific or distinctive marks. What she wishes to capture is the mundane, that without climax or event. Using these photographs as a basis she start drawing, hereby also making use of those specific characteristics of the material. More recently she has been utilising film stills instead of photography.
